In the past it was a thriving Greek colony then conquered by the Romans, it became the most important port of the Empire, second only to that of Constantinople.
Lying on the northeastern tip of Trinacria, jealous guardian of the Strait and its mysteries, Messina is a city with ancient roots and cultural heritage of great value.
Founded by the Greek with the name of Zancle, Messina enjoyed great prosperity in the late Middle Ages when, for a long time, it came to contend with Palermo for the role of Sicilian capital.
Revolts, wars, floods and disastrous earthquakes, such as the devastating one of 1908 which almost destroyed the entire territory, repeatedly brought the city to its knees which, like a Phoenician, has always been able to rise again and shine more than before.
The Sicilian nobility always had an eye for Messina and built some of its best noble palaces here.
A violent earthquake destroyed the historic center of Messina in the early 1900s and the rest was done by the Allied bombing during the Second World War.

Touring Messina
The Cathedral of Messina is dedicated to Santa Maria and was built in the Justinian Era about 500 AD.
Looking at the façade, first from afar and then in the high-relief details of the imposing entrance door, you will never imagine that this cathedral has had such a troubled history!
The Regional Museum of Messina is located at the northern end of Viale della Liberta’ and houses collections from the Civic Museum.
Sculptures, paintings and decorative artifacts arranged according to a chronological criterion.
Among the works stand out prestigious authors such as Antonello da Messina, Mattia Preti, Caravaggio, Annibale Carracci and Vincenzo Catena.
Located at the extreme tip of the San Raineri peninsula or Falcata area, Forte San Salvatore, with the his stele of the Madonna della Lettera, is one of the symbols of the city of Messina.
During the summer, in the waters in front of the Ganzirri area, the traditional swordfish fishing is “staged”.
The Feluccas ( typical boats ) plow the seas in search of what, in the city, is considered the King of the Strait.
Messina is a beautiful city to be enjoyed with the eyes, but not only.
