St Clare Monastery Wheelchair Accessible Tours

St Clare Monastery wheelchair accessible tours is located in the heart of the Naples historic center.

Aside stands the ancient Monumental Complex of Santa Chiara, also known as the Monastery of Santa Chiara.

The evocative beauty of the Cloister of Santa Chiara has its roots in 1310.

Its construction began in the heart of the historic center of Naples at the behest of King Roberto d’Angiò and his wife Sancia di Maiorca.

The church, built in Provençal Gothic forms, soon became one of the most important in Naples.

Inside some of the most important artists of the time worked.

Examples are Tino di Camaino and Giotto, with the latter performing frescoes on Episodes from the Apocalypse and Stories from the Old Testament in the nuns’ choir.

Together with the basilica was built adjacent to it also a place of enclosure for the minor friars, which later became the church of the Poor Clares.

Looking at the austere and simple façade of the homonymous church which still preserves the original Gothic forms, it is difficult to think that its cloister contains a real riot of colors and majolica.

Touring St Clare Monastery

The Monastery now consists of a Museum, an area dedicated to excavations from the Roman era and 4 monumental cloisters.

Inside the Monastery, in addition to the other cloisters, there is also the library which now has over 50,000 volumes and dozens of XVI and XVII century codices.

The Church prospered at least until the Second World War ( before then the restructuring of 1742 is remembered ).

In fact, on 4 August 1943 the allied troops bombed the city of Naples.

It causing a fire in the Basilica of Santa Chiara that lasted for almost two consecutive days.

The interiors were devastated.

The fire devoured most of the frescoes, including those attributed to Giotto.

The renovation, not without controversy, resumed the original plan and project, in perfect medieval style.

Unlike the Basilica, the cloister was not affected by the bombings of 1943. Today represents the main testimony of the ancient Baroque style of the basilica.
