Castel Gandolfo is 24 km from the center of Rome if you take the Via Appia.
In less than 40 minutes you leave the chaos of the city and find yourself in one of the most beautiful villages in Italy overlooking Lake Albano, also known by the Romans as Lake of Castel Gandolfo.
Its fame is linked to the presence of the summer residence of the popes, but there are many villas and other period residences scattered throughout its territory, built starting from the XVII century.
There are also various places of archaeological interest, including the Emissary of Lake Albano and the remains of Domitian’s Alban Villa.
The naturalistic interest is due, however, to the presence of the Castelli Romani Regional Park, which protects a large part of the Alban Hills.
The historic center of the village is a real jewel in which to get lost in long relaxing walks.

The Apostolic Palace, or Papal Palace, contains the extraordinary story of the life of the Popes of the last five hundred years.
The Pontifical Chapel of Pope Urban VIII, but also the BMW of Karol Wojtyla and the gestatory seat of Pope Pius IX.
These are some of the historical wonders that you can admire in the former papal summer residence.
Skirting the high walls of the Pope’s summer residence, before entering the heart of the village you will find yourself on the Belvedere.

You also find the well-known Pontifical Villas.
A complex of structures composed of three parts.
The first consists of the Pontifical Gardens, the original heart of the Villa Pontificia, since they were created in the period in which there was the primitive residence of Pope Urban VIII.
Villa Cybo built by Cardinal Camillo Cybo, was annexed to the complex of the Pontifical Villas, at the time of Pope Clement XIV, who bought it in 1774 from the owner of the time, the Duke of Modena.
Finally, the third block consisted of Villa Barberini built by Matteo Barberini, nephew of Pope Urban VIII.
The latter was included in the Pontifical Villas only in 1929.
