Villa Romana del Tellaro wheelchair accessible tours, is a villa covered with refined and elegant mosaics, a masterpiece of the IV century BC.
If when it comes to the archaeological treasures of Sicily everyone knows the name of the Roman Villa in Piazza Armerina.
Very few have heard of one of the most recent archaeological discoveries, the Roman Villa of Tellaro of Noto.
These are the remains of a Roman villa, home to a family of landowners, whose floors were covered with extraordinary mosaics which, for their refinement of style, are among the most significant of the time.
The excavations, which began amid a thousand bureaucratic difficulties in the mid-70s, have brought to light the remains of a 6,000-square-meter villa.
It is located on the right bank of the Tellaro river, hence the name of the villa, on a low elevation of the ground, below an XVIII/XIX century farmhouse.

Touring Villa Romana del Tellaro
The recovery of the mosaics therefore cost a patient restoration work that lasted thirty years.
During which the tiles were all detached from the original bed, now degraded, and repositioned on a new support.
A few years ago the mosaics have been relocated to the villa, in which a museum has been opened, unfortunately still poorly advertised.
The mosaics of the four surviving rooms consist of the so-called Mosaic of the Hunt.
It is filled with figures of African hunters and beasts, and surrounded by a colorful frieze with animals and geometric motifs.
Another one has a real geometric “carpet” with intersecting laurel wreaths, which covered the floor of one of the sides of the portico.
A beautiful scene, unfortunately incomplete, taken from the Iliad The redemption of the body of Hector.
Finally, a frame made up of small squares with witty Bacchic scenes and at the corners four imaginative vases overflowing with fruit, which framed a central scene which unfortunately has not reached us.
