Barberini Palace is linked to the history of the Barberini Family, which saw Urban VIII ascend to the papal throne in 1623.
Carlo Maderno began work in 1627, expanding the existing Villa Sforza; Bernini took over in 1629.
The young Borromini also participated in the construction and designed the famous spiral staircase.
The interior decorations are by Pietro da Cortona and Andrea Sacchi.
The palace was purchased by the State of Italy in 1949.
Today, together with Palazzo Corsini, it houses the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica of Rome, with a visit spanning two floors and over 20 rooms.
Among the most evocative works, Raphael's Fornarina certainly stands out, a painting created between 1518 and 1520 which portrays Margherita Luti, a woman from Trastevere, much loved by Raphael.
