St Paul Out Of The Walls Wheelchair Accessible Tours

The Basilica of St Paul Out Of the Walls is one of the four papal basilicas of Rome, previously called patriarchal, second in size only to St Peter Church.

Built in the IV century, the Basilica of St Paul Out Of the Walls is the burial place of the apostle St Paul.

After the execution of the apostle Paul, in the I century, a sanctuary was erected in the burial place of the saint.

The small sepulchral chapel, a place of veneration and pilgrimages by the early Christians, was transformed into a Basilica under the Emperor Constantine and consecrated according to tradition by Pope Sylvester I in the year 324.

Then was demolished in 386 for the construction of a major basilica, which was finalized in 395.

After a dramatic looting occurred during 846 by the Saracens, Pope John VIII decided to build a small fortified village, called Giovannipoli, near to the basilica.

It was destroyed in 1348 following a disastrous earthquake.

The history of the basilica will be marked again by a terrible disaster.

On 15 July 1823 a fire broke out in the basilica, destroying centuries of history, from which only the Cloister, a Side Chapel and the Mosaic decoration of the apse were saved.

Touring St Paul Out Of The Walls

St Paul Out Of The Walls conveys to us in a clear and precise way the spirit and mission of the Apostle.

He dedicated his entire life to the evangelization of the world until his death.

The large statue located in the vast courtyard that precedes the Basilica carries in his hands the Gospel and a Sword.

They are the powerful signs of his evangelizing mission and of the efficacy of the Word of God in the hearts of men.

Entering the Basilica, its breadth and solemnity reminds us of the universal dimension of the mission of the Gospel to be brought to the whole world and to all peoples.

At the center of the transept above the papal altar, so called, because only the pontiff or a person delegated by him can celebrate there, the beautiful Ciborium rises.

It represents one of the most beautiful sculptural works of art of Christian Rome, created by Arnolfo di Cambio in 1285.

The Ciborium, damaged by the fire, was rebuilt on XIX century columns, with some additions.

The body of the Apostle is today found under the altar of the Confession.

A white marble balustrade, erected during the Jubilee of 1575, surrounds the altar, and supports 28 bronze lamps.
