St Maria Maggiore Wheelchair Accessible Tours

The Basilica of St Maria Maggiore is one of the 4 papal basilicas in Rome.

Is one of the most richly decorated thanks to the presence of frescoes and in particular the magnificent mosaics inside panels placed under the windows of the central nave.

It was founded between 432 and 440 by Sixtus III after the Council of Ephesus.

It is located on St Maria Maggiore Square in the Esquilino district a few minutes from Termini Train Station.

St Maria Maggiore is also known as St Maria della Neve.

The reason is linked to the legend of the construction of the Basilica.

Pope Liberius would have traced in the snow, which fell unusually on 5 August, the perimeter where the building was to be erected.

On 5 August each year, there is a re-enactment of the snowfall with a spectacular throwing of white petals on the square in front of the Basilica.

The main feature of the building is the preservation of the original V century structure.

For about sixteen centuries it has dominated the city of Rome.

A Mary devoted temple par excellence and cradle of artistic civilization.

It represents a point of reference for the Cives Mundi who from all over the globe come to the Eternal City to taste what the Basilica offers through its monumental size.

Touring St Maria Maggiore

At first glance, the large façade, built on the previous one, is striking.

Works began on 4 March 1741 by Ferdinando Fuga.

Note the portico with five openings at the bottom and three in the upper loggia.

Behind the mosaics of the XIII century are still visible of the ancient facade.

The author of the mosaics is Filippo Rusuti and they show themselves to the visitor in all their magnificence.

Note the wonderful play of voids skilfully alternating with columns, round arches, capitals, cornices and statues depicting St Carlo and the Holy Pontiffs.

Particular attention deserves the Virgin and Child who seems to hover in the air.

In the transept there are rounded frescoed with figures of the Prophets, brought to light in 1931, variously attributed to Cavallini, Cimabue or the young Giotto.

Back in the right aisle, you will first encounter the Chapel of the Relics and then the large Sistine Chapel, commissioned by Sixtus V to Peretti who entrusted its construction to Domenico Fontana.

Completely frescoed by late Roman Mannerist artists directed by Cesare Nebbia and Giovanni Guerra, the chapel incorporates the ancient Oratory of the Nativity, here arranged by the Fountain.
