Museum Of Villa Farnesina Wheelchair Accessible Tours

Built in Trastevere between 1505 and 1511, Villa Farnesina is one of the most majestic buildings of the Roman Renaissance.

Commissioned by a Sienese banker Agostino Chigi, it owes its name to its second owner, Cardinal Alessandro Farnese.

Designed by Baldassarre Peruzzi, it was the prototype of the Roman suburban villa and its construction had considerable resonance.

Starting in 1511, once the walls were completed, the residence was frescoed according to an iconographic program of extraordinary breadth entrusted to the greatest artists of the period.

Peruzzi himself, Sebastiano del Piombo, Raphael Sanzio and his school including Giulio Romano and Il Sodoma.

The Museum of Villa Farnesina is also the site of archaeological discoveries located beneath part of the garden, where a luxurious house dating back to the Augustan era was discovered in the XIX century.

It is believed to have been the residence of Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa and Julia the Elder.

This residence, known as the Casa della Farnesina, is particularly rich in frescoes, many of which are now housed in the Palazzo Massimo alle Terme.

Touring Museum Of Villa Farnesina

The tour begins on the ground floor, where the splendid Loggia of Psyche is located, frescoed by the school of Raphael based on drawings by the master.

Among the festooned decorations is the fresco of the legend of Cupid and Psyche from Apuleius.

In the Galatea's Loggia, Raphael immortalizes the Nymph, with her delicate features, being carried across the water in a chariot formed from a shell pulled by dolphins, surrounded by a party of tritons, cupids, and nereids.

Sebastiano del Piombo is responsible for the painting of Polyphemus, in love with Galatea, originally depicted nude and later dressed in a light blue robe.

Going up one floor, you discover the Hall of Perspectives, frescoed by Peruzzi as an ideal continuation of the ground-floor loggias.

Through the false loggia, you can glimpse views of the Roman countryside and glimpses of the city.

For example, you can identify the Church of Santo Spirito and Porta Settimiana.

The guided tour of Museum of Villa Farnesina and Raphael's frescoes will allow you to discover one of the most elegant palaces of the Roman Renaissance and admire its rich pictorial decoration.
