The Mausoleum of Augustus, also called Augusteo, is a mighty funerary monument located near the Tiber River and the Ara Pacis, in the Campo Marzio area, in the ancient heart of Rome.
Approximately one third of the original Roman monument remains with an assumed height of at least 45 meters.
With a diameter of 87 meters, the Mausoleum of Augustus is the largest circular tomb in the world.
It was built in the I century BC and has a circular plan.
It was by the will of Augustus that in 28 BC the mausoleum was built by virtue of his victory over Marcus Anthony in the battle of Actium in 31 BC which allowed him to conquer Egypt.
He returned from the battle from Alexandria where he saw the tomb, with a circular plan and in the Hellenistic style, of Alexander the Great.
From this tomb he probably drew inspiration to create his personal monument.
Consisting of a high base covered with white marble and surmounted by superimposed floors surrounded by concentric walls and covered up to the top with evergreen trees.
Over the centuries the monument experienced the most varied uses.
Stronghold of the Colonna Family, travertine quarry, vineyard, garden, amphitheater for bull rides, gymnastic, acrobatic and pyrotechnic shows, finally a concert hall.

Touring Mausoleum of Augustus
An annular corridor surrounds the inner cell, essentially composed of three niches with a large pillar in the center, containing in turn a small square room: the actual tomb of Octavian Augustus.
The small room was located just below the bronze statue of the emperor placed on the top of the pillar, which had been lost in the course of the looting.
The monument was therefore a place where all the prominent members of a family that dominated the Roman political scene for over 80 years were buried.
The three symmetrical niches placed in the cell housed other deceased members of the Augustus Family, whose identities we know thanks to the funerary inscriptions.
The first to be buried there was Marcellus, grandson of the emperor, who died in 23 BC and to which the famous Teatro Marcello was dedicated.
Agrippa followed, right arm of the emperor and husband of the daughter of Augustus, and his sons Lucio and Gaius Cesari.
In 14 AD the founder of the Augustus dynasty was buried and later other members of the family.
The visit of the monument also includes several flights of stairs.
People with reduced mobility will therefore be able to visit the central area of the monument.
