It is defined the Mater et Caput of all the churches of Rome and of the world.
Here the Baptistery was built, for a long time the only place where the faithful could be baptized.
In its heart was the Patriarch, the seat of the Popes until the early 1300s.
Upon returning from exile in Avignon, the residence of the Popes then moved to the Vatican.
Constantine‘s mother brought the Praetorium Stairway here from Jerusalem, which Jesus walked through during his trial.
In one of its chapels, the Sancta Sanctorum, the most sacred relics of Christianity were kept.
With the transformations of the following centuries and, in particular those of the mid XVII century, the Basilica assumed its present form and for its beauty it was called Aurea, that is, made of gold.
The interior, with five naves, retains very little of the early Christian basilica.
The interventions of Borromini introduced radical changes in the ancient medieval structure.
The Presbytery and the Apse are a remake of the time of Leo XIII executed, repeating the ancient forms, by Francesco Vespignani based on a design by his father Virginio.
The mosaic of Jacopo Turriti of the Apse half dome was moved from the old apse and restored.
It is the most precious and venerable mosaic in Rome.
