In the Middle Ages, the legend that Virgil had built the Bocca della Verità to dissolve doubts about the fidelity of husbands and wives.

The folk tales refer to a young and beautiful woman, the wife of a Roman patrician, who had been accused of adultery because she received visits from another man during her husband's absence.
