The Basilica of St Sebastian Outside the Walls is located along the Appian Way, between the Caffarella Park and the Catacombs of St Sebastian.
It is part of the so-called Tour of the Seven Churches, a traditional route taken by pilgrims from around the world during the Jubilee.
Basilica stands on the site where, according to tradition, the remains of St Peter and St Paul were brought during the Christian persecution.
For this reason, the church's original name was Basilica Apostolorum, before being dedicated to St Sebastian, who was buried in the catacombs below at the end of the III century.
Fearing a Saracen attack, the saint's remains were transferred to St Peter's Basilica in 826 AD.
This was a good thing, as the attack actually occurred, resulting in the destruction of the church.
St Sebastian Outside the Walls was later rebuilt by Pope Nicholas I, while the altar of the martyr was reconsecrated by Pope Honorius III at the request of the Cistercian monks, who took charge of the church.
