San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore Wheelchair Accessible Tours

Not far from Santa Maria delle Grazie and its Last Supper, once within the medieval walls, stands the Church of the San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore.

With an almost anonymous façade despite its beautiful architectural lines, and closed to the public for years, it has now become one of Milan's most famous monuments, sought after by enthusiasts and tourists.

Milan also has its Sistine Chapel.

Just a few minutes walk from the Sforzesco Castle and the Duomo, the Church of San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore overlooks Corso Magenta.

Inside, it is a riot of painting!!!

Across the entire surface, from the vault to the pillars of the chapels, numerous fresco cycles unfold, all from the same century, the post-Da Vinci XVI century.

Saints, martyrs, and images of patrons populate the walls within illusionistic, faux architectural structures, leaving no free space.

The decorative fresco cycle allows visitors to admire the evolution of Lombard painting throughout the XVI century.

Touring San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore

The church has a unique feature.

It consists of a single, elongated rectangular nave, divided by a rood screen into two distinct sections, one for the faithful and the other for the cloistered nuns.

This was, in fact, the site of Milan's most important Benedictine convent, from the VIII to IX centuries until 1798.

The nuns came from the city's most important families, donating great riches to the monastery, which allowed for such complex and precious decoration.

Presumably, the two portraits of elegant donors kneeling and presented by saints, frescoed in the lunettes of the rood screen in the hall of the faithful, depict the patrons Alessandro Bentivoglio and Ippolita Sforza.

The beauty of the decorations is breathtaking.

The passage into the second hall, intended for the nuns, opens onto another space that was previously unsuspected, but which has nothing to envy of the great churches admired around the world.

In the cloister, which today houses the Archaeological Museum, you can see two Roman towers, preserved intact up to the roof.

One square, from which horse races in the circus started, and the other, a twenty-four-sided polygon, part of the city walls, both dating back to the late III early IV century AD.

The complex was built in a very important area of the city since Roman times, on the site of the circus, a short distance from the imperial palace.
